Summary
On March 27, the SSNA board held the first meeting of the year at the First Baptist Church of Lakeside. City representatives included Council Women District 7, Macy Hill, Director of Parks and Recs, David Lewis, Director of FW Nature Center, Jared Wood and Community Engagement Officer, Kenneth Nalley. Other special guests included board members of the other three Lake Worth NAs and members of the Sailing Club, including the Commodore.
A sign-in table, set up by Secretary Adrienne, was dutifully manned by neighbors Kris Matheus and David Walker. They kept a list of the many visitors to our meeting, checked in members who are already registered with SSNA, and collected the contact information of neighbors who attended but hadn't yet been registered.
President Deanne Kearney kicked off the meeting by introducing all of the guests from the City of Fort Worth, the new SSNA officers and recognizing the members from fellow neighborhood associations and the sailing club. After introductions, President Deanne talked highlighted the two major goals of the 2025-2026 SSNA board: rebuilding relationships and communication amongst all the neighbors in SSNA, and secondly focusing on Casino Beach development and Peninsula Club preservation. She discussed how progress on these two goals are going so far, and our next steps going forward.
Fort Worth City Councilwoman Macy Hill was invited by the president to speak next. She introduced herself and spoke of things going on within District 7 which we would be interested in being involved with. In particular, Councilwoman Hill impressed upon us the upcoming meeting about the installation of a concrete plant, which will be held Thursday, April 3rd at 7 pm on Ray Roberts Cut-off. More information can be found here: Public Meeting: Raptor Ready Mix Inc, 177217L002 Later in the meeting, Councilwoman Hill promoted the use of the MyFW app as a way to communicate effectively with the city, in particular for drawing attention to things that need to be addressed in particular areas.
Fort Worth Parks and Rec Director David Lewis then introduced himself and stepped us through a Casino Beach brief, which included our previously submitted SSNA inputs. He opened up the floor for questions from the neighbors regarding the development. Questions included:
- Will there be docks or marina? There can be if that is what we would like.
- Will there be a boardwalk? There can be if the at is what we would like.
- Who we get the revenue? The revenue will go back into Casino Beach for development and upkeep.
- What are the target dates? Looking to get proposals for development by Fall 2025.
- Will there be hiking and biking trails? There can be if the at is what we would like.
- Will there be more patrol? There will be an increase in patrol as needed.
- What about overnight camping? Overnight camping is not allowed in Fort Worth Parks
- How much concrete will be used? How much is used is up to how we would like development to look.
- Where does the budget come from? City funding and grant money
Next, Dave spoke about the city's new Green Space Initiative and how that program will help preserve the green space lands we already have (which are already owned by the city's water department).
Tom Mast highlighted the need for us neighbors to supply ideas and partner with the city in the development of Casino Beach.. He talked about past projects that were approved or in the stages of approval to put large housing developments or storage facilities in the area and stated that if we work with the city in planning then we would have results that are more in line with what we would like Casino Beach to be. Casino Beach (unlike other green spaces in our NA) will not remain undeveloped. Someone will change it to an area for profit, and we have the opportunity to influence how it is shaped.
One of our visitors commented about a safety fair that was extremely successful, and another resident talked about an outdoor community center at Casino Beach.
President Kearney quickly turned the meeting to the business of passing the by-laws. The motion was heard and seconded to vote on the bylaws by two neighbors on Peninsula Club. The by-laws were unanimously passed by the yeas, with no nays.
Secretary Adrienne Taylor briefly discussed the need to collect contact information from everyone in the neighborhood, and what it is used for. She also explained how communication is primarily through the blog and email list, with the Facebook page as an extra that echos what is sent on the email list.
Treasurer Tom Mast discussed the current state of financial affairs for the SSNA. He shared the names of those who donated, the total amount of money in the account, and how money was spent. Thanks to the donations recieved we were able to rent the meeting room at the church to host this meeting.
A motion to adjourn the meeting was made and a second heard, closing the meeting at 8:00
